Everyone is trying to find a way to switch off from their busy lives. Whether it be yoga, meditation or a hot bath, we all have different ways to help us relax. It can be hard to find time to fit relaxing activities in amongst working and socialising. CBD is a quick and easy way to help you feel calm. CBD can be taken every day to help with relaxation as a natural plant-based supplement.

What is CBD?

The full name for CBD is cannabidiol. CBD is a cannabinoid, and it is derived from cannabis plants. The ‘high’ that is associated with cannabis comes from a cannabinoid called THC and not from CBD. This means that CBD products won’t get you ‘high’. It is completely illegal to sell THC in the UK. You can buy many different types of CBD including CBD sweets and bath bombs. Reputable companies publish lab reports so you can understand the percentage of CBD in their products.

Can CBD help me relax?

CBD interacts with your body through the endocannabinoid system. This system is involved in lots of processes like the production of hormones, digestion and appetite. The endocannabinoid system is very important for keeping our bodies functioning as well as they can. Scientists have concluded that taking CBD has the potential to help with mental health problems, pain and autoimmune diseases because of the way it can help support the endocannabinoid system[1].

Two endocannabinoids are very important in regulating moods and helping you relax: anandamide and 2-AG. Anandamide is sometimes referred to as the ‘bliss molecule” because of how it makes us feel. Problems with the endocannabinoid system can lead to a deficiency in anandamide and an excess of 2-AG making us feel stressed and unhappy. Taking CBD helps your endocannabinoid system produce the right amount of each endocannabinoid leaving you feeling balanced and calm.

Because the endocannabinoid system is linked to the production of hormones in the body, CBD can affect the production of cortisol. Cortisol is responsible for our ‘fight or flight’ feeling. Too much cortisol can make you feel stressed and anxious. Scientists found that taking CBD caused the level of cortisol to decrease[2]. A decrease in the levels of cortisol in your body will help you feel much more relaxed.

Can CBD help with anxiety?

There have been many different studies looking into whether CBD can help with anxiety. The vast majority of scientific findings have been positive. A study in 2019 concluded that “CBD has a promising role as alternative therapy in the management of anxiety disorders”[3]. A 2015 study similarly concluded, “current evidence indicates CBD has considerable potential as a treatment for multiple anxiety disorders”[4]. More research needs to take place to further understand how CBD helps with anxiety but the current evidence is very positive.

CBD and Bedtime Relaxation

Winding down after a busy day is always difficult. Some meditation exercises and a calming herbal tea can make a big difference. It’s also a good idea to try and avoid screens in the half-hour before bedtime. Many people find that CBD can help them get to sleep. A 2019 review of CBD studies concluded “many of the studies did show a positive effect on sleep” but noted that these studies had small sample sizes and often were measuring many other things too[5].

How do I take CBD?

You can buy lots of different types of CBD in a variety of forms. At Mee CBD we offer sachets, powders and drops. Our CBD is water soluble which makes it perfect for taking every day. You can add it to your morning smoothie, evening herbal tea or simply a glass of water. We recommend keeping your CBD next to your kettle to help create a routine.

Water soluble CBD has lots of benefits over other types of CBD like CBD oil. Water soluble CBD has increased bioavailability which means more CBD is absorbed into your bloodstream. You don’t have to consume a large amount to get all the benefits of CBD.

Mee CBD products are all organic so you know that they are made from high-quality plants which have not been exposed to pesticides. It’s important to take CBD every day as its effects increase over time as it builds up in your body; it won’t work as well if you take it every now and again.

Summarising CBD and Relaxation

CBD affects lots of different bodily processes because of the endocannabinoid system. Keeping your endocannabinoid system functioning well is important for managing stress levels and anxiety. CBD may also be able to help you relax before bedtime enabling you to get a good night’s sleep. It’s important to take CBD regularly to experience its full benefits.
