Mee organic CBD for depression and mood

Many of us experience low moods and stressful days. In the UK, the long, dark winters can make you feel down and it can be difficult to stay positive. In any given week in England, up to 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem resulting from low mood, such as depression or anxiety.[1] Prescription medications might make you feel better but they are not the best option for everyone and can have uncomfortable side effects.

In recent years, CBD has emerged as a natural alternative treatment to medication due to its therapeutic properties. The way that CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system in the human body suggests that it might be able to help regulate and improve our moods.

What is CBD?

CBD, cannabidiol, is derived from cannabis plants. It’s a non-psychoactive cannabinoid and is completely natural. It’s legal in the UK to buy, sell and take CBD. It doesn’t get you ‘high’ because that sensation comes from another cannabinoid, THC, which is psychoactive and illegal.

The Endocannabinoid System

Every human being has an endocannabinoid system (ECS). This is a system in your body, just like the nervous system. The ECS is involved in functions such as memory, learning, mood regulation, appetite and sleep, as well as many other things. There are three main parts of the system: endocannabinoids, cannabinoid receptors, and enzymes, that break cannabinoids down.

CBD, the Endocannabinoid System and your Mood

Doctors and scientists still aren’t exactly sure what causes mood disorders and imbalances. One of the main theories is that imbalances in the ECS can cause mood disorders. These imbalances could be related to a lack of endocannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors. CBD stimulates your ECS which can help combat a shortage of endocannabinoids.

In addition, two endocannabinoids play an important role in helping the brain regulate emotions and moods: anandamide and 2-Arachidonylglycerol (2-AG). Mood disorders have been linked to low levels of anandamide combined with high levels of 2-AG. This combination leads to the overstimulation of CB1 receptors so your brain reacts by reducing the number of this type of receptor.[2] This makes the mood imbalance worse. As taking CBD increases the amount of cannabinoids in your body, this can result in your ECS becoming more balanced.

Does CBD increase dopamine?

Your nervous system uses dopamine to send messages between cells and it’s an important part of how we feel pleasure and happiness. CBD has been linked to dopamine in some studies. A 2016 study found that high quantities of CBD had the ability to activate dopamine receptors.[3] A deficiency in dopamine receptor activity has been previously linked to anxiety and depression.[4] Taking CBD regularly has been linked to potentially helping your body’s dopamine receptors work as they should.

How else does CBD improve your mood?

While feeling down can be linked to internal chemical balances, it can also be due to external factors like your lifestyle and diet. Problems with sleep or insomnia are very common and they can be very damaging to your mental health if they persist. CBD is renowned for its ability to improve the quality of sleep.[5] A sachet of CBD powder in your evening herbal tea may help you drift off quickly.

Anxiety is another condition that can worsen your mood. Scientists have found that CBD is a “promising” treatment for anxiety.[6] Many people find that taking CBD daily helps them feel calmer. If you’re out and about and are feeling anxious you can add a few drops of water-soluble CBD to a glass of water to experience its calming effects.

A Summary: CBD and Improved Mood

CBD is closely linked to your mood because of the importance of the endocannabinoid system. Research has shown that taking CBD can help with imbalances in your mood. Its benefits for sleep and anxiety also contribute to its mood-boosting properties. When buying CBD you should always buy organic, high-quality products to make sure you get the best possible effects. If you’re taking any prescription medication you should talk to your doctor about taking CBD first.
