Across the globe, millions of people suffer from chronic joint pain and CBD is emerging as a potential source of much-needed pain relief. Mee CBD has shown particular success with our users for whom persistent pain or stiffness of joints has restricted their lifestyle and impacted their quality of life – not wanting to take painkillers daily has led to many seeking natural remedies, like CBD.

Having been a total sceptic, since I discovered water-soluble CBD I can finally get a night’s sleep pain-free; to be able to ditch the painkillers feels like a major breakthrough.

Whatever the condition– mild or severe, diagnosis or not– joint pain can take its toll on both your mental and physical wellbeing. Pain and discomfort can impact sleep quality, exercise ability, and interfere with social engagements, which can stop you from doing what you love.

Joint problems are typically characterised by inflammation. Our immune system requires a varied, nutritious diet to function efficiently; if we don’t get enough of the nutrients that we need, this can flare up inflammation and worsen joint pain. There are some great ways to supplement a balanced, nutritious diet to protect our joints– one of which is cannabidiol, or CBD.

CBD is a natural cannabinoid from the hemp variety of the cannabinoid plant. CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) and has shown to have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. Within the ECS are cannabinoid receptors, which are particularly abundant in the brain and the immune system. The ECS is therefore heavily involved in inflammation and pain perception, which explains the therapeutic actions of CBD.

The advantage of taking CBD compared to stronger painkillers is that it has widespread benefits for other aspects of our physical and mental wellbeing– here are some examples:

EXERCISE

Despite high impact exercise being a risk factor for joint injury, refraining from activity altogether can do more harm for your joints than good. Regular gentle movement can protect damaged joints by promoting blood flow to the area and building the surrounding muscle.

Medical professionals often advise those with sore joints to exercise regularly in order to reduce joint stiffness. As anyone who suffers from chronic joint pain will know, this is often easier said than done. With the pain that accompanies high impact movement, and the risk of further injury, it is not uncommon to avoid exercise altogether.

Harm-free animal studies, particularly of dogs with joint problems, have shown that CBD increases mobility of the vulnerable joints1.  (Verrico, C. D., Wesson, S., Konduri, V., Hofferek, C. J., Vazquez-Perez, J., Blair, E., Dunner, K., Jr, Salimpour, P., Decker, W. K., & Halpert, M. M. (2020).

CBD has also shown to be effective in promoting movement and mobility in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients2 (Zettl, U. K., Rommer, P., Hipp, P., & Patejdl, R. (2016).

This evidence, alongside its pain-relieving properties, suggests that CBD could make it that bit easier to incorporate gentle movement into your day and promote joint mobility. Activities such as swimming, yoga, Pilates, and walking are great for our joints.

MOOD

Physical health and mental wellbeing go hand in hand. It is not uncommon for the distress caused by joint pain to manifest itself as anxiety or depression. Similarly, stress has the ability to worsen inflammation around the body.

It is important to look after your mental wellbeing in the same way you do your physical health.

For those that may need a helping hand, CBD has also shown promise in reducing symptoms of mood disorders, such as anxiety. Although you should always seek professional help if things get too much, CBD may give a vital mood boost on your hardest days when persistent pain makes it hard to function normally.

REST

Regular CBD use can also result in improvements to sleep quality. Prolonged sleep deprivation can have a negative impact on joint function, exacerbating pain and inflammation. Interestingly, researchers have identified a role for CBD in the treatment of some sleep disorders. As those suffering with chronic joint pain will know, any improvements to sleep quality will have an immeasurably positive effect on their life.

MOBILITY

Medical professionals often advise those with sore joints to exercise regularly in order to reduce joint stiffness. As anyone who suffers from chronic joint pain will know, this is often easier said than done. With the pain that accompanies high impact movement, and the risk of further injury, it is not uncommon to avoid exercise altogether.

Animal studies, particularly of dogs with joint problems, have shown that CBD increases mobility of the vulnerable joints1.  (Verrico, C. D., Wesson, S., Konduri, V., Hofferek, C. J., Vazquez-Perez, J., Blair, E., Dunner, K., Jr, Salimpour, P., Decker, W. K., & Halpert, M. M. (2020). A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of daily cannabidiol for the treatment of canine osteoarthritis pain. Pain, 161(9)) CBD has also shown to be effective in promoting movement and mobility in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients2 (Zettl, U. K., Rommer, P., Hipp, P., & Patejdl, R. (2016). Evidence for the efficacy and effectiveness of THC-CBD oromucosal spray in symptom management of patients with spasticity due to multiple sclerosis. Therapeutic advances in neurological disorders, 9(1), 9–30). This evidence, alongside its pain-relieving properties, suggests that CBD could make it that bit easier to incorporate gentle movement into your day and promote joint mobility.

ARTHRITIS

With over 10 million people in the UK suffering from arthritis, the research into CBD and joint pain largely focuses on arthritic pain, and the results are hugely promising.

A survey of arthritis patients found that over two thirds of CBD-users experienced significant improvements to their physical arthritis symptoms. It was also found that three quarters of those taking CBD experienced better sleep and reduced levels of anxiety3 (Arthritis.org. (2019)

Whilst CBD may not be a replacement for medication, there is an increasing body of evidence to suggest that it can effectively manage joint pain – our regular Mee users tell us so themselves….

“Thanks to Mee CBD I am able to walk again for the first time in years!” Ellen, 73, Zimbabwe

“My recurrent back pain that has meant I was no longer able to run regularly has actually properly subsided; it feels like muscle recovery not just numbed by painkillers” Peter, 40, London

So, whether for yourself to get back to full fitness and freedom of movement – or if you know a loved one who suffers – then try Mee CBD and see how it could help. As always, we love to hear your personal stories so drop us a line Hello@MeeCBD.com
