CBD to Quit Smoking and Alcohol Addiction

Whether it’s nicotine, caffeine or alcohol, many people have something they simply can’t live without. Trying to wean yourself off can be tricky, especially if you experience strong cravings. Some research suggests that CBD might be able to help with a range of addictions and the good news is that CBD itself is not addictive.

What is CBD?

You’ve probably heard of CBD but you might not know that its full name is cannabidiol. Some people think that CBD gets you high because it’s made from cannabis plants but this is not true. CBD doesn’t get you high because it doesn’t contain any of the cannabinoid THC. Another common misconception is that CBD is illegal, probably because of its association with cannabis. However, CBD has been legal in the UK for a number of years as long as it contains no THC.

Can CBD help you quit smoking?

Smoking is one of the hardest addictions to quit but it can bring huge benefits for your health and your bank balance if you manage it. A review of scientific papers in 2015 concluded that CBD showed potential for helping with tobacco addiction[1]. In 2018 researchers in the UK found that when participants took CBD, they had weaker cravings for tobacco when they saw a picture of someone smoking a cigarette[2].

CBD and Alcohol

Whilst alcohol can be a great addition to a social occasion, drinking too much regularly can have long-term negative effects on our health. Researchers in 2018 found that taking CBD for seven days helped prevent relapses in rats that regularly drank alcohol[3]. Alcohol Use Disorder is when you build a tolerance to alcohol. This means that you have withdrawal symptoms like headaches when you don’t drink, and you experience cravings for alcohol. A review of studies that took place in 2019 found that CBD could help people with Alcohol Abuse Disorder reduce the amount they drank and help with liver and brain damage caused by drinking.

Opioid Addiction

Opioid addiction is a significant problem throughout the US but it also affects many lives in the UK. There are currently limited options to help people quit opioids and doctors are searching for more ways to help people. Cannabis and CBD are one option being proposed by scientists looking to try and help people. Researchers in 2018 concluded that cannabis showed potential for helping with opioid addiction and that it should be investigated further[4]. In January 2022 the US Food and Drug Administration approved a clinical trial for CBD to treat opioid abuse[5].

Some people also turn to CBD instead of opioids, not because of its ability to help with addiction, but because it can help with chronic pain. Chronic pain is one of the most common reasons that people take opioids and there have been many studies that have found that CBD can help with chronic pain. A study in 2019 found that “over half of chronic pain patients (53%) reduced or eliminated their opioids within 8 weeks after adding CBD-rich hemp extract to their regimens” and “almost all CBD users (94%) reported quality of life improvements”[6]. If you take any prescription medications, it’s important to consult with your doctor before you take CBD.

CBD and Drug Addiction

There have been some trials to understand how CBD can help with drug addiction. One case study found that taking CBD helped a patient recover from a cannabis addiction when other medications had failed[7]. In 2018, a scientific test on rats found that CBD could help with cocaine addiction. The researchers found that CBD reduced drug-seeking behaviour in regular and stressful situations[8]. They also found that even when they stopped administering CBD, the addiction did not return within five months.

Can you become addicted to CBD?

If you’re trying to quit an addiction to something, you might be worried about becoming addicted to something else instead! The good news is that CBD is not addictive. The World Health Organisation has concluded that CBD is safe to use and that there is no reason to suggest that people might become dependent on it[9]. You can take CBD as a plant-based supplement as part of your daily routine.

All of the products at Mee CBD contain water-soluble, organic CBD. Water-soluble CBD allows you to get more CBD for your money. It is absorbed much more effectively by your body compared to oil-based CBD. The fact they are made organically ensures that the CBD you’re taking doesn’t contain any toxins or pesticides leftover from the growing process. If you take CBD every day, you want to be sure it’s high quality and safe.
