“By the end of the day my hip would be so stiff it was difficult to sleep”

How cannabinoids are providing relief for sufferers of osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis sufferers often find mobility is severly reduced making harder to do the things they love

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis in the UK and causes joints to become stiff and painful. It can affect anyone at any age but it’s more common in older people and women. Some people find that the pain is manageable but for others, it can interfere with their day-to-day life. If you don’t want to take painkillers regularly, CBD offers a natural alternative for relieving pain and restoring mobility in your body.

What are Cannabinoids?

There are a range of different cannabinoids, all derived from hemp plants. The most common subclasses of cannabinoids are Cannabidiol (CBD) and Cannabigerols (CBG). CBD makes up around 40% of all cannabinoids. CBD is a non-psychoactive compound found in the hemp plant. In contrast to THC (the main psychoactive compound in the hemp), CBD doesn’t produce a high. Instead of being taken recreationally to alter the body and mind, CBD is used to treat physical and mental conditions. Unlike THC, CBD is legal in the majority of locations and a hugely popular natural remedy across the globe.

What Research is there about Cannabinoids and Osteoarthritis?

Research has been taking place in recent years to understand if cannabinoids can help with osteoarthritis. The Arthritis Foundation conducted a poll of its members and found that 29% of them were CBD users.[1] In total, 80% of the people they asked were using cannabinoids, had used them in the past or were considering them to relieve their arthritis. Amongst those taking CBD, most people said that they were sleeping better, and they found it easier to move their joints. A smaller number said they found it decreased their pain.

One of the main advantages of taking cannabinoids is that they are all-natural and derived from plants. Taking painkillers or sleeping pills for extended periods can leave you vulnerable to addiction and they have unpleasant side effects.

More research is required to fully understand the relationship between cannabinoids and osteoarthritis. At the moment, lots of the evidence is reliant on people’s experiences rather than extensive research. However, CBD is a safe and natural treatment for osteoarthritis and can be taken every day as a plant-based supplement.

How does CBD help Osteoarthritis?

CBD has powerful anti-inflammatory properties, as it interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in our body. The ECS manages a variety of functions in the immune system and nervous system, such as sleep, mood and pain. When CBD enters your body, it interacts with special receptors in the brain including the CB2 receptor. This receptor is responsible for managing inflammation and pain. CBD helps to influence the nerve pathways in your brain which control how you feel pain, reducing any inflammation felt in the body and regulating the ECS. By reducing swelling and inflammation in the joints, CBD eases the pain that osteoarthritis sufferers experience, alleviating muscle tension and restoring mobility in the body.

My legs were so painful I could barely walk, but with the advanced formula soluble CBD in my water I can finally move again.

Cannabinoids and Osteoarthritis

Cannabinoids have the potential to relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis. Studies have shown promise and anecdotal evidence suggests that many people benefit from taking CBD. In our own Mee trials we found mobility was one of the conditions that showed greatest improvement when our supplements were enjoyed as part of a regular diet. If you know anyone that could benefit or want to know more please drop us a line Hello@MeeCBD.com.
