Entourage effect CBD - We're continuously learning more about cannabis and discovering more of its capabilities. Scientists and medical professionals are now interested in using the cannabis plant as a whole. We call this ‘the entourage effect’ and research suggests it may be the most impactful way to utilise cannabis.
The entourage effect relates to consuming multiple cannabis compounds, terpenes and flavonoids. These compounds have been shown to work together for more optimum performance and to also balance out certain types of mind and body responses.
On working together, there are many studies and much anecdotal evidence that suggests CBD and THC work together effectively to help the battle with cancer. However, the medical evidence is still inconclusive, and treatment of cancer is not recommended or signed off by the UK medical authorities. Although the combination of THC and CBD as a treatment of certain side-effects of traditional cancer treatments is signed off.
Perhaps the most obvious example of balancing effect of the entourage effect is in the illicit market. Cannabis strains have been bred to express large amounts of THC at the expense of CBD for the past 30 or 40 years. "Grass” smoked in the 60s is a very different beast to the “skunk” smoked in the 90s. THC has the effect of getting someone “high” whereby CBD balances this effect and helps to “ground” people. This grounding effect means people can feel the “high” but with less risk of the potentially harmful side-effects associate with an isolated THC and THC dominant strain – these side-effects are well documented.
As with all things, nature often serves up a good recipe and the most naturally occurring cannabis plants tend to contain a THC to CBD ratio of near to 1:1. In the illicit market THC to CBD maybe as much as 30:1 which has the effect of super high but in an unbalanced way. The pot smokers of the 60s where much more aligned with the natural balance of 1:1.
In alternative medicine scenes, the more naturally occurring 1:1 ratio of THC:CBD is often referred to as the perfect balance for working with cancer. The truth is, there is much research being performed at present, which is ultimately inconclusive on cannabis’ effect on diseases such as cancer. However, many anecdotal stories of successful treatment are prevalent in the industry, and investment by large cannabis and pharmaceutical companies into cannabinoids in combination to treat a variety of diseases is growing exponentially. Israel and Canada are often leading the World in these studies.
Mee CBD is predominantly contains CBD along with trace amounts of other cannabinoids (there is no THC in Mee CBD), and other beneficial terpenes. Mee CBD utilises the entourage of the naturally occurring compounds in organic hemp plants with a broad range of customer reported benefits.
THC is the psychoactive compound in the Cannabis Sativa plant. When inhaled or consumed, THC produces a mind-altering high. Most THC is sourced from marijuana plants as these have a naturally high concentration of the compound. However, THC remains illegal in the vast majority of countries for recreational and medical use, including the UK. Outside of Europe, many nations allow the compound for medical purposes.
Studies show THC has many potential medical benefits. The compound can help relieve pain, alleviate nausea, encourage healthy brain function, treat anxiety, fight against tumours and more.
CBD is a much more widely accepted natural health solution. Unlike THC, CBD isn't psychoactive, meaning it doesn't produce a high. Instead, CBD affects the body without altering the mind. Mee CBD can interact with the receptors, enzymes, and hormones in the body to help relieve pain and improve mental wellbeing in many cases. Studies already show the impressive abilities of the compound. But, as we learn more about CBD, it seems as though the natural chemical compound's capabilities are limitless.
Cannabidiol products are usually consumed in food or drink, inhaled, or put directly on the skin. Mee CBD focuses on making CBD part of your daily routine, which is why all products can be seamlessly added to your morning smoothie or lunch time cup of coffee.
Terpenes are a lesser-known cannabis compound. The naturally occurring chemical is present in a variety of plants and animals and contributes to their unique odour and appearance. Different cannabis strains are dictated by the terpenes present. Recent studies show terpenes may also influence how the body reacts to the plant. Terpenes are consumed in combination with CBD products. However, researchers are currently studying the effects of taking terpenes in isolation.
Research surrounding the entourage effect CBD.
Although studies surrounding the entourage effect are limited, the results are promising. The interaction between CBD, THC, and terpenes may have numerous health benefits. Research shows using all three can increase the therapeutic effects that one alone can have on the body and brain.
Potential benefits of the entourage effect include:
- Pain relief
- Reducing anxiety and anxious thoughts
- Stopping/limiting the body's inflammation process
- Helping support those with epilepsy
- Killing cancer cells—THC in in combination with other cannabinoids is a possible antitumor agent that works by killing cancer cells
- Avoiding fungal infections (due to its antibacterial properties)
Medical professionals and those suffering from chronic illnesses have expressed concerns regarding the entourage effect and the mind-altering abilities of THC. But as discussed above, CBD has been shown to counteract Tetrahydrocannabinol's psychoactive capabilities. Therefore, the entourage effect reduces the amount that the brain from getting as high as it does when using THC alone.
A 2011 study shows the side effects of THC (hunger, anxious thoughts and drowsiness) weren’t present when taking in combination with CBD. But, a 2019 study disproves the entourage effect. The research shows terpenes didn’t alter the impact THC had on the body; CB1 and CB2 receptors react to THC with and without terpenes in the same way.
More research on the entourage effect and how it functions with the body is necessary for us to draw any solid conclusion on its medical benefits. As scientists continue to investigate the cannabis plant in its many facets, we recommend sticking with CBD, a cannabis compound that millions of people are reporting life changing benefits from, to their mental and physical wellbeing.
