What is the endocannabinoid system?

The endocannabinoid system is a biological system that runs throughout the body. Although research is still in the preliminary stages, studies show the endocannabinoid system (ESC) controls numerous bodily functions. The ESC works by sending signals around the body through a complex system of receptors, enzymes and endocannabinoids.

The endocannabinoid system promotes homeostasis, this is the running of your internal body. Studies show the ECS can assist:

Research is still in the early stages, thus the full capabilities and responsibility of the ECS remains unknown.


How does the endocannabinoid system work?

The enzymes, receptors and endocannabinoids work together in the endocannabinoid system. You’re likely familiar with the term ‘cannabinoid’ as a Mee CBD user.

Endocannabinoids are cannabinoids created by the body. So far, scientists are familiar with two prominent endocannabinoids: anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglyerol (2-AG). AEA regulates feeding behaviours such as appetite, taste and is often referred to as the bliss molecule for the associated heartwarming feeling it has been shown to provide. 2-AG influences emotional responses, pain receptors and energy levels.

After carrying out their functions, enzymes break down the endocannabinoids in the body. As the ECS has helped the body achieve balance, we don’t want the endocannabinoids continuing to make changes. Fatty acid amide hydrolase breaks down AEA endocannabinoids. And monoacylglycerol acid lipase destroys 2-AG.

CBD is also a cannabinoid but unlike AEA and 1-AG, CBD is not created in the body. Rather it needs to be ingested much like a vitamin. CBD then enables, among other good things, the endocannabinoids in your body to interact more effectively with the endocannabinoid system.

The ECS is a collection of cannabinoid receptors that bind to with cannabinoids that are either endo (made by the body) or Our two main cannabinoid receptors are called the CB1 and CB2 receptors. Different cannabinoids react with different receptors and some cannabinoids react with both. Each cannabinoid therefore creates a unique effect on the body.

For example, if a cannabinoid binds to the CB1 receptor it can help regulate brain chemical function. And a different cannabinoid may bind to a CB2 receptor to indicate inflammation is happening. The scientific studies into the scope and function of the 114 known cannabinoids on human body is in its infancy. CBD, CBDa, THC, THCa, CBG, CBC, CBN and THCVa are currently the most researched cannabinoids, and are showing profoundly interesting therapeutic benefits.

Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CED) is considered to be a potential reason for difficult-to-characterise psychosomatic pathologies. Psychosomatic pathologies are psychological conditions that become physical conditions without explanation.

Endocannabinoid System and CBD

The exact science behind CBD and the endocannabinoid system is not fully understood. However, research shows CBD interacts with the ECS to calm the symptoms of anxiety and depression, reduce inflammation, and increase the efficiency of the endocannabinoids (the internally created cannabinoids).

Many believe CBD works by stopping endocannabinoids being broken down (by those powerful enzymes), so the endocannabinoids can have a longer, more intense effect. Another common hypothesis is that CBD binds to a currently unknown receptor that causes it to influence a range of bodily functions.
