CBD For OCD: Does It Work?

When you think of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, you likely imagine someone who is very particular in their ways. They always ensure everything is aligned and spotless or excessively double-check that they have locked their car door. However, this mental condition is rarely understood, impacting at least 2-3% of the world's population.

It is generally paired with intrusive thoughts and obsessive behaviours and is often accompanied by anxiety and depression. Someone with OCD often feels as though they do not have their life under control.

OCD is typically treated with cognitive behavioural therapy or medication. But, it is essential to note that serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) are the only drugs FDA-approved to treat OCD.

As CBD has become more popular and the more curious people have become, more people have anecdotally reported that cannabidiol (CBD) products have aided their OCD symptoms. However, scientists are still conducting extensive research to note whether there is a possibility CBD can be used to treat CBD.

But, no need to panic just yet. Some of the research that has come out has shown encouraging findings!

This article reviews the most recent studies on the effectiveness of CBD as a treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We also discuss whether it can be used to treat symptoms of the condition and what particular forms of CBD are appropriate for OCD.

Why is it believed that cannabidiol (CBD) can alleviate OCD symptoms?

Some people with OCD are turning to CBD oil as a natural supplement because the condition is classified as an anxiety disorder. Most people associate CBD with its ability to restore equilibrium in the mind and body.

Medications used to treat OCD, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), might have undesirable side effects. However, many believe that CBD, as a natural supplement, has a more comprehensive and positive impact on their health.

Although CBD is not a cure for OCD and shouldn't be used in place of conventional therapies for the disorder, it can be a supportive addition to overall health for those who struggle with OCD.

Can CBD be used to treat OCD symptoms?

CBD's potential to alleviate OCD symptoms is still primarily speculative and anecdotal. This is because just a few studies have looked into whether or not CBD helps people with OCD.

However, in a few studies, OCD sufferers who received CBD or other cannabinoids reported fewer OCD symptoms due to the treatment. Regardless, additional longitudinal clinical trials are required to evaluate the safety and efficacy of CBD on individuals suffering from OCD.

Although slightly different from CBD products, a study was conducted by Washing University where 87 individuals with OCD participated in a study to examine the effects. Researchers discovered that patients mentioned a:

  • 60% decrease in compulsions
  • Reduction in intrusive thoughts (around 49%)
  • Reduction in anxiety (about 52%)

But this study highlighted that higher CBD cannabis dosages resulted in a more significant decrease in obsessive behaviour.

Therefore, there is currently no established dose for CBD because the FDA has not approved it to treat OCD, and there is not enough evidence to confirm its benefits.

CBD should be dosed conservatively at first, and then increased as your body adjusts to the product. Some individuals decide to begin with a dose of around 40 milligrams per day.

What Form of CBD Product Is Ideal for OCD?

CBD can be taken in a variety of forms, including candies, patches, tinctures, and oils. However, there is minimal proof that one form of CBD product is superior to the others. Perhaps more essential than the specific delivery method is the total amount of CBD in each serving.
